What is scrolling?
Tasked with designing and building a web exhibit centered around “scrolling,” I used Javascript to break down what it means to scroll- how it controls our attention and time- and how we can claim it back.
The exhibit features found footage in an attempt to document instances of scrolling IRL- like flipping the pages of book, watching clouds scroll across the sky or a window shade slide up and down. The videos play only when the user is actively scrolling - when the user stops scrolling the videos stop as well. Once the viewer reaches the bottom of the web page a print dialogue is automatically triggered, generating a randomly selected page of frames pulled from one of the found footage videos.
When users scroll to the bottom of the exhibit, an automatic print dialogue is triggered. The print is a randomly generated selection of frames from one of the videos featured in the web exhibit.
In addition to the web exhibit, I created a series of risograph prints featuring moments of physical scrolling.
